If you don't know already, you probably won't need three guesses to figure out (as I learned) who her daddy was. I'd known that Diane made her Playboy appearances under her real name of Marguerite Diane Empey, but I'd never made any connection. Diane repeated her sea creature portrayal in a 1967 episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, appropriately titled, 'The Mermaid. One of my favorite books as a kid was "Over the Top", by Arthur Guy Empey-his memoirs of his days as an American volunteer in the British infantry before the U.S. One MERMAIDS OF TIBURON review remarked that, as she plays a mermaid, Dianes surname 'Webber' must have been an in-joke in fact, though, it is her married name. I did discover a bit of fascinating (to me, anyway) historical trivia while doing the research for this one, something I'm frankly astounded I hadn't stumbled on before now. This particular episode of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" incorporated stock footage from her 1962 nudie-cutie flick, "The Mermaids of Tiburon". Sometimes you just gotta step back and wait for the inspiration (or whatever it is).Īs any guy my age knows, Diane was one of those "B" actresses (with "DD" talents) who appeared in at least one episode of every television series you ever heard of in the late Fifties through the mid-to-late-Sixties, and, as the sign says, was a Playboy Playmate of the Month not just once but twice, which was in keeping with her off-screen embrace of the nudist lifestyle. I made a start, but for some reason it just wasn't working out the way I wanted it to, so it got put on the back burner while the Audie Murphy, Robin Moore, Chairman Mao and self-portrait got done. Empey died on Augin Los Angeles at the age of 76 due to complications following surgery for cancer. This one actually had its start back in November (or even before), when Froggyboggler posted her "Every Inch a Sailor" album cover to the Bottom of the Sea" was one of my favorite tv shows as a kid, and when Froggy posted her pic and the comments were made thereon, and I remembered Diane Webber had played a mermaid in one episode, it kinda sorta began to gel in my mind how to do a 'toon about it. In the Gay Talese book Thy Neighbor`s Wife, the story tells of a man who carried Diane Webber`s nude picture in his wallet for fifteen years as his masturbatory fantasy. She also appeared on the covers for several vinyl record albums including Les Baxter`s Jewels of the Sea, Sea of Dreams by Nelson Riddle, Marty Paich`s Jazz For Relaxation and Chile con Cugie by Xavier Cugat. Webber posed for many famous photographers such as Peter Gowland, Bunny Yeager and Russ Meyer. The Wonderful Webbers by June Lange, published by Elysium Inc in 1967, documented the Webbers nudist life style. She later took an interest in nudism, appearing in numerous nudist magazines. Empey took ballet lessons from Russian ballerina Maria Befefi and later worked as a chorus girl at Bimbo`s in San Francisco. The photos for her 1956 appearance were taken by soft core porn director Russ Meyer. Under the name Marguerite Empey she was Playboy magazine`s Playmate of the Month in May 1955 and in February 1956. Empey was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Marguerite (née Andrus) and screen writer Arthur Guy Empey. Webber AKA Marguerite Empey (July 29, 1932-August 19, 2008) was an American model, dancer and actress.
